Bing Places for Business: What It Really Does for Your AI Visibility
Most Naples owners have a Google Business Profile and nothing on Bing. The listing is free and takes twenty minutes, and the reason usually given for claiming it is not quite the reason that holds up.
Bing Places for Business is a free listing that controls how your business appears across Microsoft search surfaces, and it now lives at bing.com/forbusiness rather than the old bingplaces.com. Claiming it is worth doing. The argument for it, though, is narrower and better evidenced than the version you will usually read.
The demand is real enough. BrightLocal found roughly 45 percent of consumers now use generative AI when looking for a local business1, and research into citation patterns shows AI systems lean heavily on a small set of well-established sources rather than on the open web evenly2. So the question of which indexes feed which assistants genuinely matters to a local owner deciding where to spend twenty minutes.
Here is where this guide differs from the rest. Almost every article on this topic opens by telling you that ChatGPT searches Bing, so claiming Bing Places gets you into ChatGPT. We tried to verify that and could not. What we could verify is a documented Microsoft pathway that is a perfectly good reason to claim the listing anyway.
What Bing Places is, and where it moved
Bing Places for Business is Microsoft's free business listing, equivalent in purpose to a Google Business Profile. It moved from bingplaces.com to bing.com/forbusiness, existing listings were migrated, and it now sits alongside Microsoft Advertising and Webmaster Tools under a single Microsoft account.
The move matters practically because so much published guidance still points at the old address. We checked this ourselves rather than repeating it: bingplaces.com now returns a permanent redirect to bing.com/forbusiness. If a guide sends you to bingplaces.com without mentioning the move, it was written before October 2025 and has not been touched since, which is worth knowing before following its other advice.
Trade reporting places the relaunch on 3 October 2025, describing a rebuilt portal with a faster import from Google and unified account management across Microsoft Advertising and Webmaster Tools3. We are attributing that to the trade press rather than to Microsoft, because it is the level of sourcing available; the redirect itself is the part we verified directly.
Functionally the listing does what a Google Business Profile does on the other side of the fence. It holds your name, address, phone, hours, categories, photos and description, and it determines how Microsoft surfaces represent your business. For a Naples service business the effort is small and the fields are ones you have already written once.
The documented reason to care: Copilot grounds on Bing
Microsoft states that Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat use generated search queries sent to the Bing search service to ground responses in web data. That is a platform owner describing its own mechanism, which makes it a far stronger basis for action than any inference about other assistants.
The wording is worth having exactly. Microsoft's documentation states that Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat both use generated search queries sent to the Bing search service to ground responses in web data, and describes Copilot parsing a prompt, generating a short search query, sending it to Bing, and composing a response from what comes back4. Copilot even shows users the exact search queries it sent4.
That is a documented chain from your Bing presence to an AI answer, and it is the one to reason from. It concerns Microsoft 365 Copilot specifically, so it is worth not overstating: this is Microsoft describing its own product, not a general claim about every assistant that carries the Copilot name. Even so, it is more than any competing article offers for the ChatGPT version of the claim.
The practical implication is modest and real. If Copilot is grounding answers in Bing results, then how Bing understands your business, its category, location, hours and legitimacy, is an input to what Copilot can say about you. A missing or wrong listing is a gap in that input. That alone justifies the twenty minutes without needing anything further.
If the wider question is whether AI systems can see your business at all, the site itself is usually the bigger constraint. Our free SEO audit checks what crawlers actually receive from your pages, and our AI search optimization work is built on documented mechanisms like the one above rather than on the folklore in the next section.
The ChatGPT claim worth examining
The standard pitch for Bing Places is that ChatGPT searches Bing, so a listing puts you in ChatGPT. We could not verify that. OpenAI documents its own crawler for ChatGPT search results and names no third-party index, and its search help page is not publicly fetchable.
Here is what OpenAI actually publishes. Its crawler documentation describes OAI-SearchBot as used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT search features, alongside GPTBot for model training and ChatGPT-User for user-initiated fetches5. That is OpenAI operating its own crawler to populate its own search results. Nowhere in that documentation is Bing, Microsoft, or any third-party search index mentioned5.
We also tried OpenAI's ChatGPT search help article directly and it returns a 403 to automated requests, so we could not read it. Beyond that, the sources asserting the Bing connection are marketing and SEO blogs, several of which openly hedge, describing the arrangement as never officially confirmed and speculating about multiple indexes. That is not a basis for telling a business owner where their money and attention should go.
So we are not saying the claim is false. Arrangements between these companies have existed and may still. We are saying it is not currently verifiable from either company's documentation, and our standard is not to assert what we cannot trace. If OpenAI publishes a statement of mechanism, this section gets rewritten that day.
The useful part is that the recommendation does not depend on it. Claim the listing because it is free, because Bing has its own users, and because Microsoft documents Copilot grounding on Bing. If the ChatGPT connection also turns out to be real, you were already covered. That is a decision that holds up under either answer, which is the only kind worth making under uncertainty. We took the same approach to getting cited by ChatGPT, where the honest answer is likewise narrower than the marketing.
How to claim the listing, and import from Google
Start at bing.com/forbusiness, sign in with a Microsoft account, and use the import from Google Business Profile rather than typing everything again. Then review every imported field, because an unchecked import is how inconsistent business data spreads onto a second platform.
The import is the shortcut worth using. Your Google Business Profile already contains the name, address, phone, hours and categories in a form you have checked, so importing keeps the two consistent by construction rather than by memory. Microsoft rebuilt this import as part of the relaunch3, which is one of the more useful changes for anyone starting from an established Google presence.
Then check what arrived. Imports carry across whatever was in the source, including the mistakes, and categories in particular do not always map cleanly between the two platforms. Read every field once. This is also a natural moment to notice inconsistencies you have been living with on Google, since you are reviewing the data anyway.
One consistency point specific to service businesses. If you do not serve customers at your address, the same logic that applies to Google applies here: publishing a location you do not operate from creates a data conflict across platforms and misrepresents where you are. Keep the two listings telling the same story, because inconsistency between them is a signal to every system reading both.
- Go to bing.com/forbusiness. The old bingplaces.com address redirects here. Sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Search for your business first. An unclaimed listing may already exist. Claim it rather than creating a duplicate.
- Import from Google Business Profile. Faster than manual entry and keeps the two platforms consistent from the start.
- Review every imported field. Categories, hours and service areas especially. Imports carry mistakes across as faithfully as they carry facts.
- Complete verification. Follow the method offered. An unverified listing is not doing the job you claimed it for.
- Add photos and a real description. Write it for a person, not for a keyword. Both platforms reward the same thing here.
What actually moves AI visibility, beyond the listing
A listing is table stakes rather than a strategy. The factors that decide whether an AI system names your business are broader: whether your pages can be read at all, whether you have third-party presence, and whether the business is well enough established to be worth citing.
Set expectations honestly. Research into what correlates with AI citations points at established authority rather than at listings: referring domains are among the strongest correlates, and sites with fewer than 2,500 referring domains average only a small number of citations6. Citation patterns also concentrate on a narrow set of well-known sources2. A new listing does not change that overnight and nobody should tell you it will.
The prerequisite most businesses actually fail is more basic. If your pages assemble their content in the browser rather than in the server response, much of what you publish may never reach the systems doing the citing at all. That is a bigger and cheaper win than any listing, and we set out the two-minute test for it separately.
So the order of operations is: make sure your content is readable, claim the free listings on both platforms and keep them consistent, build genuine reviews and third-party mentions, then judge results on calls and booked work rather than on any single AI visibility score. Google's own AI surfaces work differently again, which we covered in what Google AI Mode means for Florida businesses.
- Claim both listings and keep the data identical across them.
- Confirm your pages deliver content in the server response, not only in the browser.
- Build genuine reviews and third-party mentions; those correlate with being cited.
- Do not buy anything sold on a guarantee of ChatGPT placement.
- Judge the outcome on calls and booked work, not on a vendor visibility score.
What is a Bing listing really connected to?
Five questions grounded in Microsoft and OpenAI documentation, plus one thing we checked ourselves. Sources linked in the guide.
-
1Where does Bing Places for Business live now?
Answer: bing.com/forbusiness
Microsoft moved it. The old bingplaces.com address now redirects to bing.com/forbusiness, which we confirmed ourselves rather than taking on trust. Existing listings were migrated, and the portal was rebuilt alongside Microsoft Advertising and Webmaster Tools under one Microsoft account. A great many published guides still send people to the old address, which is a decent test of how recently they were written.
-
2Does Microsoft say Copilot uses Bing?
Answer: Yes, Microsoft 365 Copilot grounds responses using the Bing search service
Microsoft states in its own documentation that Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat use generated search queries sent to the Bing search service to ground responses in web data. That is an unusually clear statement of mechanism from a platform owner, and it is the strongest documented reason for a local business to care about how it appears in Bing.
-
3Does ChatGPT retrieve its search results from Bing?
Answer: It is widely claimed but not confirmable from OpenAI documentation
This is the honest answer and it is not the popular one. OpenAI documents its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, as being used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT search features, and names no third-party search index anywhere in that documentation. The Bing connection is repeated constantly in marketing articles, and we could not trace it to any OpenAI statement, so we do not assert it.
-
4Can you import your Google Business Profile into Bing?
Answer: Yes, an import tool exists
Microsoft provides an import path from Google Business Profile, which was rebuilt as part of the relaunch. It is the fastest way to create the listing, since your Google profile already holds the name, address, phone, hours and categories in the form you have already checked. Import first, then review every field, because an import that is not checked afterwards is how inconsistent data spreads to a second platform.
-
5What is the strongest argument for claiming the listing?
Answer: It is free, quick, and feeds a documented Copilot pathway
The decision does not need the disputed claim to make sense. The listing is free, takes roughly twenty minutes with the Google import, and connects to a grounding pathway Microsoft documents for Copilot. It also affects how Bing itself represents your business. When the cost is that low, you do not need certainty about every downstream AI system to justify twenty minutes.
Honest self-check. There is no sign-up, and nothing is stored.
