A growing share of searches now end with an AI-generated answer instead of a list of blue links. Google shows AI Overviews, and ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions directly, citing a few trusted sources while everyone else disappears. Answer Engine Optimization and Generative Engine Optimization are how you become one of those cited sources. This field is loud and full of fabricated statistics and empty promises, so we take the opposite approach: technically accurate, honestly sourced, and clear about what we can and cannot do. This page explains how AI search actually works, what genuinely drives citations, and how we optimize for it. The readiness check below scores your site in about two minutes.
What is AI search optimization? (GEO, AEO, and how they relate)
AI search optimization is the work of getting your business found, read, and cited by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. Two terms describe it: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), being the direct answer an engine surfaces, and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), being cited by generative tools. They overlap heavily and rest on the same foundation as traditional SEO. The listings side matters too, and we set out what a Bing listing actually does for AI visibility, including which part of the usual pitch does not hold up.
In practice it is less a new trick and more a discipline: make your content accessible to AI crawlers, structure it so it can be quoted, and build the consistent, trustworthy presence across the web that AI engines rely on to decide who to name.
How is AI search different from a Google results page?
A traditional Google results page gives you a list of links and lets the user choose. An AI answer synthesizes a single response and names a few sources, deciding who gets mentioned before the user sees anything. The competition changes from ranking in a list to being quoted in the answer.
That shift matters because if the AI does not cite you, you are invisible for that query no matter how well you rank in the classic results. Being a source AI trusts is becoming as important as ranking on page one.
Does GEO replace SEO, or build on it?
It builds on it. Despite the "SEO is dead" headlines, AI engines draw from the same web and, in Google's case, the same search index. The authority, clarity, structure, and trust signals that rank you in search are the same signals AI engines use to decide who to cite. A business with strong SEO foundations has a large head start on AI visibility.
So AI search optimization is not a replacement for local SEO or technical SEO. It is an additional layer built on the same base, which is why we run them as one program rather than selling AI search as a separate magic trick.
How do AI engines actually choose which sources to cite?
AI answer engines behave like retrieval systems. They favor content they can access without executing JavaScript, that answers the question in a clear, self-contained passage, and that comes from a business with a consistent, credible presence across the web. Reviews, accurate business data, and third-party mentions all feed the trust that decides who gets named.
There is no submission form and no way to pay to be the answer. Anyone claiming a shortcut is selling one. What works is being genuinely accessible, genuinely clear, and genuinely trusted, which is exactly what we build.
How does Google’s AI Overview pick pages?
Google AI Overviews do not run on a separate secret index. They draw from the normal Google Search index, selecting and summarizing pages that already rank and that answer the query well. That is a crucial, often-misunderstood point: strong classic SEO is the first filter for appearing in AI Overviews.
It also means the work compounds. Improving your organic rankings improves your odds of being pulled into an AI Overview at the same time, so there is no need to choose between the two.
What is Google’s AI Mode, and how do you optimize for it?
AI Mode is Google’s conversational, generative search experience, a step beyond AI Overviews where a person can ask a full question and follow up in a back-and-forth. Under the hood it breaks a complex question into many related sub-queries and draws answers from across the web, then assembles a response and cites sources. The practical implication is that a single page no longer has to match one keyword; it has to genuinely answer a question and its natural follow-ups.
You do not optimize for AI Mode with a special trick. Google’s guidance points to the same foundation as the rest of AI search: create genuinely helpful, people-first content with a clear point of view, make it accessible to crawlers, and structure it so a self-contained passage answers the question. (Source: Google Search Central, AI features and your website.) Because it fans a question out into sub-topics, content that covers a subject thoroughly, with clear headings that mirror how people actually ask, has the advantage. That is exactly how we structure the pages we build, including this one.
AI Search Readiness Check
Answer eight quick questions about your site and presence. You will get an honest readiness read and a plain-language list of what to fix so AI engines can find, read, and trust you. This is a self-assessment, not a live scan.
Can ChatGPT and Claude even see your website?
This is the question almost every competitor ignores, and it is the sharpest one. The major AI crawlers, including GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, fetch raw HTML and generally do not execute JavaScript. If your site renders its content in the browser with JavaScript, those crawlers may see an almost empty page, so you can rank in Google and still be invisible to AI. (Source: Vercel, the rise of the AI crawler.)
The fix is technical, not magic: serve your content in server-rendered or static HTML, keep a clean robots.txt that allows the AI search bots, and put a crisp answer near each heading. We handle this as part of the technical foundation, and this very site is built that way.
What actually drives AI citations for a local business?
For a local business, AI recommendations lean heavily on the same signals that power the Map Pack, plus broad consistency. A complete Google Business Profile, consistent name, address, and phone across Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, and Foursquare, genuine recent reviews, and clear answer-first content on your own site all feed whether an AI names you.
AI assistants often draw on third-party data providers for local information, so your presence across those platforms, not just Google, shapes whether you appear. We build that consistent, verifiable footprint deliberately.
What is llms.txt, and does it work yet?
You will see agencies selling llms.txt, a proposed file that lists your content for AI models. Here is the honest status: it is unproven. No major AI platform has confirmed it as a ranking or citation input, adoption is minimal, and studies have found the vast majority of llms.txt files are never requested by AI crawlers. Google's own team has compared it to the long-ignored keywords meta tag. (Source: Ahrefs, llms.txt study.)
We will add one because it is cheap and harmless, but we will not build your strategy around it or promise it drives citations. Debunking the hype is part of how we earn your trust.
Myths we will not repeat
The AI-search category is full of statistics that sound authoritative and are not. We do not repeat them, because putting a false number on your page is exactly the kind of claim we refuse to make. Specifically:
- We do not cite the viral "GEO boosts visibility 40 percent" figure. It comes from a paper whose method explicitly allowed fabricated data.
- We do not state "40 percent of searches will bypass traditional results" or similar future projections as fact. They are unverified vendor claims.
- We do not promise a guaranteed number-one spot in ChatGPT or any AI engine. No one can honestly guarantee it.
- We do not sell llms.txt as a proven citation lever, because it is not one yet.
How do you track traffic and referrals from AI tools?
You can measure more than most agencies admit. When someone clicks through to your site from ChatGPT, Perplexity, or a Google AI Overview, that visit usually shows up as referral traffic in Google Analytics, from domains such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Setting up a segment or a simple channel grouping for those sources turns an invisible trend into a number you can watch grow over time. It will not capture the times an AI names you without a click, but it is real, honest data rather than a made-up score.
Alongside referral tracking, we periodically test your core questions directly in each engine and record whether you are cited, so you have both the quantitative signal from analytics and a qualitative read on how you are being represented. That combination is how we report AI visibility without inventing a precise metric that no tool can actually measure. It also tells us which pages are earning citations, so we can build more of what works.
How we optimize your site for AI search, and how we measure it
Our method is deliberately unglamorous because that is what works: audit your crawlability and rendering so AI bots can read you, restructure key pages with answer-first passages, implement clean structured data, strengthen your entity and review consistency across the web, and monitor whether you appear in AI answers over time.
On measurement, we are honest about the limits. AI visibility is harder to track than classic rankings, and no tool sees every query. We check your core queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, report what we find, and never invent a precise "AI visibility score" to look impressive. What we will not do is guarantee a ranking or promise overnight domination.
