# SEO agency or freelancer: which one your business actually needs
There is a real answer to this and it is not always the agency. The honest version depends on how much of the work is one skill, and what happens when one person is unavailable.

Most comparisons of this kind are written by agencies and conclude that you need an agency. The useful version starts somewhere else: SEO is not one job. It is content, technical work, local profile management, review generation, reporting and link acquisition, and those are genuinely different skills. Whether one person can cover what you need is the question, and for a lot of Naples businesses the answer is yes.

## When a freelancer is genuinely the better choice
In one line: if you can name the single skill you are buying, you are probably buying a freelancer. If your requirement is concentrated in one skill, a specialist freelancer will usually do it better and cheaper than a generalist agency. A business that needs content written to a brief, or a one-time technical fix, or a Google Business Profile properly set up, is buying a defined piece of work rather than an ongoing program of several disciplines.
The economics are also different in a way that favors you. A freelancer carries almost no overhead, so more of what you pay reaches the actual work. On a small engagement that difference is significant, and paying agency rates for work a single specialist could do is a genuine waste.

- The work is mostly one discipline, such as content or a technical rebuild
- You have somebody in-house who can brief, review and coordinate
- The engagement is a defined project rather than an open-ended program
- Your budget is below the point where an agency can staff it properly

## The failure mode nobody warns you about
The risk with a freelancer is not competence. It is concentration. One person is a single point of failure for holidays, illness, a bigger client arriving, and for the accounts and passwords that hold your business online. We wrote about the version of that problem that outlives the relationship in [who actually controls your domain name](https://seoagencynaples.com/blog/who-owns-your-domain-name/), and it is the most common expensive mess we are asked to clean up.
The mitigation costs nothing and almost nobody does it. Own the accounts yourself and add the freelancer to them, rather than letting the freelancer create them. Keep the domain registered to the business. Make sure any work delivered is documented well enough that a second person could continue it.

- **Register everything in the business name.** Domain, hosting, analytics, Business Profile. Add the freelancer as a user, never as the owner.
- **Ask what happens if they are unavailable for a month.** A good freelancer has an answer. The absence of one is the finding.
- **Require the work to be written down.** What was changed and why, in a document you keep, so the next person is not starting blind.

## When an agency earns the difference in price
An agency is worth the premium when the work genuinely spans several disciplines at once, when it has to continue without gaps, and when somebody other than you has to hold the plan together. A business running technical work, content, review generation and local profile management simultaneously is coordinating four skills, and coordination is most of what you are paying for.
There is a second, less obvious reason. Some of this work carries compliance exposure, and the cost of getting it wrong is not a ranking. A medical practice, a med spa or a law firm operating under advertising rules is buying somebody who knows those rules, which we cover in [the constraints particular Naples industries face](https://seoagencynaples.com/blog/naples-industry-ranking-constraints/).

- Myth An agency is always more thorough than one person. Truth Not automatically. A large agency can allocate a junior to your account and still charge the agency rate. The question is who does the work, not how many people the firm employs.
- Myth Freelancers are cheaper, so they are the safer financial choice. Truth Cheaper per hour, and the exposure sits elsewhere. If one person holds your accounts and disappears, the recovery cost can exceed a year of the difference in fees.
- Myth You have to choose one or the other. Truth Plenty of businesses run an agency for the ongoing program and a specialist freelancer for a defined piece. That is a normal arrangement, not a compromise.

## How to decide, in four questions
Work through these honestly and the answer usually declares itself. Nothing here requires a call with us, and if the answer comes out freelancer, that is a good outcome rather than a lost sale.

- **Can you name the single skill you are buying?** If yes, a specialist is likely the better value. If you named four things, you are describing a program.
- **Who coordinates the work?** If nobody in your business has time to brief and review, you are buying coordination, which is an agency function.
- **What does a month of no progress cost you?** If a gap is survivable, concentration risk is acceptable. If it is not, redundancy is worth paying for.
- **Does your industry carry advertising rules?** Medical, legal and financial work carries compliance exposure that changes who is qualified to do it.

- **Is a freelancer always cheaper than an agency?** Per hour, almost always, because a freelancer carries little overhead and more of the fee reaches the work. Over a full engagement the comparison is less clear, because the scope is usually different. An agency retainer typically covers several disciplines running at once, while a freelance engagement covers one well. The genuine risk to price in is concentration: if one person holds your accounts and becomes unavailable, the recovery cost can exceed the fee difference for a year. That risk is cheap to remove by owning the accounts yourself.
- **Can a freelancer handle local SEO for a Naples business?** Frequently yes, particularly if the work is concentrated in the Google Business Profile, reviews and a set of location pages. Those are related skills that one competent person can carry. Where it gets harder is when technical work, content production, review generation and link acquisition all need to run at the same time, because that is four disciplines and a coordination job on top. The realistic test is not the size of your business, it is how many things need to happen simultaneously.
- **What should I own rather than letting a freelancer own it?** All of it, and this is the single most useful thing on this page. The domain should be registered in your business name, and the hosting, analytics, Google Business Profile and any advertising accounts should be created by you with the freelancer added as a user. This costs nothing at the start and is expensive to fix later. We see more damage from access that outlived a working relationship than from any technical mistake, and it applies equally to agencies.
- **How do I judge whether a freelancer is any good?** The same way you should judge an agency: ask what specifically they will do in the first month, and ask them to show you completed work you can verify yourself. A useful answer names pages, changes and dates. A weak answer describes activity in general terms. Ask what they would not do for you as well, because somebody willing to talk you out of unnecessary work is usually the person worth hiring. Our guide on choosing an SEO company covers the questions in more detail.
