> Several of the highest-value things in local SEO are free and take an afternoon. Here is what to do yourself first, and the point where help pays for itself.

# What to do yourself before you pay anybody
A meaningful share of local search performance comes from work that costs nothing and needs no specialist. Doing it first tells you whether you have a problem an agency can solve.

We would rather you did the free things first. Partly because it is honest advice, and partly for a practical reason: a business that has already claimed and completed its Google Business Profile, fixed its contact details and started asking for reviews is a business where the remaining problems are the ones we are actually useful for. If those basics are missing, no retainer fixes the underlying issue faster than you can.

## Do these yourself, this week
In one line: if the profile, the details and the reviews are not sorted, that is the work, and you can do it. None of the following requires a specialist, a tool subscription or a contract. Each takes somewhere between twenty minutes and an afternoon, and together they cover a meaningful share of what determines whether a local business appears when somebody nearby searches.

- **Claim and complete your Google Business Profile.** Correct primary category, hours, services, service area and photographs. This is the single highest-value free action in local search.
- **Make your name, address and phone identical everywhere.** Website, profile, directories, social accounts. Inconsistency here quietly costs you, and fixing it costs nothing.
- **Start asking every satisfied customer for a review.** A simple, consistent, compliant process. Our guide on [review generation](https://seoagencynaples.com/blog/how-to-get-more-google-reviews/) covers the FTC rules that apply.
- **Check the domain is registered in your business name.** Not your developer’s. See [who actually controls your domain](https://seoagencynaples.com/blog/who-owns-your-domain-name/) for the mechanics.
- **Turn on a second factor for your email account.** Email resets every other account you own, which makes it the one that protects the rest.
- **Write down what you actually sell, in your customers’ words.** Most local sites describe services in internal language. This one costs nothing and helps everything else.

## Where doing it yourself stops paying
The free work has a ceiling, and you reach it faster than you would expect. Beyond that point the remaining levers are technical, editorial and relational: making a site legible to crawlers and to AI systems, publishing sustained content that answers real questions, and earning links from sources that carry weight. Those take specialist knowledge and, more limiting, consistent time every week.
Time is usually the binding constraint rather than knowledge. Most owners could learn what is required. Very few can protect four hours a week for it indefinitely while running the business, and SEO responds to consistency more than to intensity. An honest reason to hire is not that the work is beyond you, it is that it will not happen otherwise.

- Technical work where a mistake is expensive to reverse
- Content at a volume and cadence you cannot sustain alone
- Link acquisition, which is relationship work and slow
- Competitive categories where everyone has already done the basics
- Regulated industries where advertising rules constrain what you can say

## The honest test for whether you need help
Do the free work first, then wait a month and look at what happened. If your profile was incomplete and your details were inconsistent, correcting them often produces visible movement on its own, and you have solved the problem without paying anybody. That is a good outcome and it happens more often than the industry likes to admit.
If you complete all of it and still cannot be found, you have learned something more valuable than any audit could tell you: the problem is not the basics. That is the point at which outside help is buying you something real rather than doing what you could have done yourself for free.

- Myth SEO is too technical for a business owner to do any of it. Truth The highest-value local actions are not technical at all. Profile completeness, consistent details and a review habit are administrative work, and they matter more than most technical fixes for a local business.
- Myth If I do some myself, an agency will have less to do and charge less. Truth Usually the opposite in a good way. Starting from a clean base means the money goes to work that moves things rather than to fixing basics, so you get more for the same fee.
- Myth Doing it myself risks breaking something. Truth For the free actions listed here, almost nothing is irreversible. The riskier work is technical, which is exactly the part this page suggests not doing yourself.

## If you would rather just know where you stand
There is a shortcut through all of this that costs nothing and involves no commitment. Our [free SEO audit](https://seoagencynaples.com/free-seo-audit/) checks what a machine can see of your site, including whether AI crawlers can reach you and whether your content is extractable, and gives you a prioritised list. If it comes back saying your fundamentals are fine, that is a real answer and you should not hire anybody on the strength of it.
If you would rather talk it through, that is what the [contact page](https://seoagencynaples.com/contact/) is for, and we will tell you when the honest answer is that you do not need us yet. That happens regularly and it is a better outcome for everyone than a retainer that was never going to work.

- **Can I do SEO myself for my Naples business?** Some of it, and specifically the parts that matter most for a local business. Claiming and completing your Google Business Profile, making your name, address and phone identical everywhere, and building a consistent review habit are administrative rather than technical, and together they cover a meaningful share of what determines local visibility. What you will struggle with is technical work, sustained content and link acquisition, which need specialist knowledge and, more importantly, consistent weekly time that most owners cannot protect while running a business.
- **What is the single most valuable free thing to do?** Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile, with the correct primary category above everything else. Category selection drives which searches you are eligible to appear for, and getting it wrong quietly excludes you from the results you most want. After that, make your business name, address and phone number identical across your website, profile and every directory, then start asking every satisfied customer for a review using a consistent and compliant process. None of these costs anything and all three matter more than most technical work for a local business.
- **How do I know when to stop doing it myself?** Do the free work first, then wait a month and look at what changed. If your profile was incomplete and your details were inconsistent, correcting them frequently produces visible movement by itself, in which case you have solved the problem without paying anybody. If you complete all of it and still cannot be found, you have learned that the problem is not the basics, which is genuinely useful information. That is the point where outside help buys you something rather than doing what you could have done free.
- **Will an agency charge less if I have already done the basics?** Not usually less, but you get considerably more for the same fee, which amounts to the same thing. When an engagement starts with an incomplete profile, inconsistent details and no review process, the first months go on fixing those, and they are things you could have done yourself. Starting from a clean base means the money goes to work you genuinely cannot do alone: technical depth, sustained content and links. Doing the free work first is one of the few ways to increase what a retainer actually returns.
