# What cheap SEO actually buys, and when it is enough
Some businesses are served perfectly well by inexpensive work. The problem is not the price, it is that the cheapest tier is where the practices that can damage a site tend to live.

Our own rates start at $1,500 per month and are published in full, so this page has an obvious bias and you should read it with that in mind. The argument is not that cheap SEO is worthless. It is that price buys hours, hours buy scope, and below a certain point the scope is too small to include the things that actually move a local business, which leaves the provider two options: do very little, or do something risky.

## What different budgets can realistically cover
In one line: the fee sets the hours, the hours set the scope, and no description of a package changes that arithmetic. It helps to think in hours rather than in packages. Whatever the monthly fee, a provider has to cover their own costs before any work happens, and what remains is the hours available for your business. That arithmetic sets the ceiling on scope regardless of how the package is described.
At the lowest tier the honest version is a small amount of maintenance: keeping a profile current, a little content, some reporting. That can be genuinely appropriate for a business in a quiet category with no local competition. It is not going to move a competitive Naples category, and a provider claiming otherwise is describing a result the hours cannot produce.
Budget level What it can genuinely cover What it cannot
Lowest tier Profile upkeep, light content, basic reporting Technical work, sustained content, link acquisition
Middle tier One or two disciplines properly, ongoing All disciplines at once, competitive categories
Our range, from $1,500 Several disciplines running together, month to month Guaranteed rankings, which nobody can offer

## When inexpensive work is genuinely the right call
This is the part that agencies leave out. If you operate in a category with little local competition, if your Google Business Profile is the main thing that matters for you, and if your budget genuinely does not stretch further, then inexpensive, careful maintenance is a reasonable purchase and better than nothing.
It is also the right call when you are testing whether search is a channel for you at all. Spending modestly for six months to find out whether anybody is searching for what you sell is a sensible experiment. What is not sensible is spending modestly for three years and concluding that SEO does not work, when what was actually tested was a scope too small to answer the question.

## The risk that is specific to the cheapest tier
The concern is not that cheap work underdelivers. It is that at a low enough price, doing the work properly is impossible, which leaves shortcuts as the only route to something that looks like progress. Those shortcuts are the practices Google names in its spam policies, and the consequences land on your site rather than on the provider.
The two that appear most often in low-cost packages are mass-produced location pages that differ only by a place name, and links acquired in bulk. Google names both patterns directly, which we covered in [the doorway page trap for multi-location businesses](https://seoagencynaples.com/blog/multi-location-duplicate-page-trap-swfl/). The reason to care is simple: when it goes wrong, the provider moves on and the site is still yours.

- Myth All cheap SEO is a scam. Truth No. Plenty of low-cost providers do modest, honest maintenance work and are upfront that it is modest. The problem is the ones that price like maintenance and promise like a full program.
- Myth You get what you pay for, so the most expensive option is the best. Truth Price is a ceiling on scope, not a guarantee of quality. There are expensive agencies doing thin work. The question is what specifically is being done, at any price.
- Myth Cheap work is harmless even if it does not help. Truth Usually true, with one exception. Where the price is too low for legitimate work to fit, shortcuts become the only way to show movement, and those carry real risk to your site.

## How to evaluate a cheap proposal without being cynical
Ask what will actually be done, in what quantity, and by whom. A good low-cost provider will answer plainly and describe a modest scope, and that answer is a good sign rather than a bad one. A provider at the same price describing a comprehensive program is either mistaken about their own economics or not being straight with you.
Then ask the question that separates the two: what will you not be doing for me at this price? Somebody willing to name the gaps is somebody you can work with. If the honest answer is that the scope is too small for your market, a better use of the money is often to fix the fundamentals once, properly, and then maintain them yourself. - **Is $500 a month enough for SEO?** It depends on your category and what you expect from it. Think in hours rather than packages: whatever the fee, the provider covers their own costs first and what remains is the time available for your business. At the lowest tier that realistically buys profile upkeep, a little content and basic reporting. In a quiet category with little local competition that can be genuinely adequate. In a competitive Naples category it will not move rankings, and any provider promising that it will is describing an outcome those hours cannot produce.
- **What is the actual risk of cheap SEO?** Not underdelivery, which is visible and survivable, but the shortcuts that become necessary when the price is too low for legitimate work to fit. The two that appear most often are mass-produced location pages differing only by a place name, and links acquired in bulk. Google names both patterns in its spam policies, and the consequence lands on your website rather than on the provider, who is usually no longer involved by then. That asymmetry is the reason to care about method rather than only about price.
- **Why do your rates start at $1,500?** Because that is roughly where several disciplines can run at once rather than one at a time, and our published rates go up to $5,000 depending on the market and the work involved. It is worth being direct that this page comes from a firm with an interest in the answer. The honest position is that below our range there are legitimate providers doing modest work well, and above it there are expensive firms doing thin work. What separates them at any price is whether they will tell you specifically what is being done.
- **How do I judge a cheap proposal fairly?** Ask what will be done, in what quantity, and by whom, then ask what will not be done at that price. A good low-cost provider answers both plainly and describes a modest scope, which is a positive signal rather than a negative one. Be wary of the opposite pattern: a maintenance price attached to a comprehensive-sounding promise. If the honest answer is that the scope is too small for your market, spending the money once on fixing the fundamentals properly is often a better use of it than a small retainer that runs for years.
